Increasing A Farm’s Income Through Diversification

A farm needs not only to rely on the crops being produced but by harnessing its by-products such as organic fertilizer, organic insect repellant, etc.
Last November 28, staff from the Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Training Institute (DA-ATI) visited the school and extended an invitation to the “Binhi ng Pag-asa Provincial Summit” set for December 2. Aside from the talks, conferences, and exhibits there was the Step-Up Cup: Youth Towards Leadership (Project Proposal Making Contest).
With just four days to prepare, Jeremy Feria, School Administrator, and Agri-tech teacher gathered Liwen Aibud Barnuevo, Mark Ivan Jhones Mojana, and Klein Rhover Alcala students to represent not only the school but the whole of Lipa City. Liwen and Mark Ivan are Grade 11 students while Klein is in Grade 10.
These students early this year attended a workshop on project proposal writing sponsored by DA-ATI. The workshop further honed the students’ skills in writing project papers. At Dagatan Family Farm School (DFFS) (http://dagatanffs.org/) the students are trained to write and defend project proposals as early as Grade 7.
Mark, Liwen, and Klein just had four days to refine their paper titled “Diversified Farming Enterprise.” It is a study on how a farm can increase its income by discovering its many possible potential products.
The students did DFFS and Lipa City proud. Their paper won 5th place among a field of 21 papers. They were the only High School students among college-level and graduating college students.
The students will be honored for their achievement on December 12, at the flag-raising ceremonies at Lipa City Hall.
Mark, Liwen and Klein, and the other students in DFFS are in need of support or educational assistance.
