Dagatan Family Farm School (DFFS)
Hot and spicy, burning and strong; that’s what the new product coming from the Farm School is. We offer you our CHILI GARLIC in CORN OIL
Chili peppers are a popular spice in many parts of the world and are well known for their hot, pungent flavor. They are rich in vitamins, minerals, and various unique plant compounds. Chilies are known for their health benefits. Chilies are known to help in reducing heart diseases because it is rich in potassium and beneficial compounds such as Capsanthin. Moreover, the fruit is known to help in the blood flow throughout the body due to its protein content. It helps build muscle, cartilage and regulates the nervous system. Chilies are also famous for helping promote weight loss and assist in pain relief. Conserve Energy Future (www.conserve-energy-future.com) lists 13 health benefits of chili pepper.
Garlic is a common spice in every kitchen and is a species in the onion genus, Allium. It is used widely as a flavoring in cooking. Wikipedia lists garlic as a close relative of the onion, shallot, leek, chive, and Chinese onion. Health Online (www.healthonline.com) listed 11 proven health benefits of Garlic. It has been known to have antimicrobial, diaphoretic, diuretic, expectorant, anti-flatulence, and cholesterol-lowering agents. Medical News Today (www.medicalnewstoday.com) published an article about the health benefits of using garlic and stated as such: “Garlic is widely used for several conditions linked to the blood system and heart, including atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), high cholesterol, heart attack, coronary heart disease, and hypertension.”
Both garlic and chili date back over 6,000 years. Garlic was used throughout Europe and Asia while Chili originated in the Americas, growing very popular in South America over the years. People have used both these ingredients in medicine and food because of the various things that they have helped alleviate or cure through the centuries (www.garlicandchili.blogspot.com).
Either chili or garlic can produce hot, spicy, burning, and strong flavors. Combine them and one comes up with a very tasteful product. In its right proportion, this product will give you just the right sensation that you need to increase your appetite for eating. Include here the choice of oil (Corn Oil) and you have one tasty, delightful and healthy creation.
But more than the appetite for eating, this product satisfies the desire of the Dagatan Family Farm School to provide education to sons of small farmers and entrepreneurs in Lipa City and neighboring municipalities; for every bottle you buy helps send a child to the school. The enterprise was conceptualized to help finance its scholarship program which allows poor but deserving young boys to get a high school education with an entrepreneurial orientation at DFFS. Instead of asking for scholarship assistance, which is at most one time, the enterprise will ensure that the scholarship fund will be more sustainable and long-lasting.
The Business:
CHILI GARLIC in OIL is a well-known condiment that mixes chilies, garlic, and oil. It is usually used as a topping or a dipping oil to enhance the flavors of any dish. One can use it as a stand-alone sauce for every dish and can also be used as a base to cook something delicious. According to www.alphafoodie.com, the product can last up to six (6) months particularly if stored in a sterilized, airtight container or the fridge. At normal room temperatures, it can last up to three (3) months.
The enterprise was an offshoot of the small Chili Pepper farm established at an idle, open space at the back of the campus of DFFS. An area, approximately 250 square meters, was cleared and devoted to chili pepper production both for educational and business purposes. Land preparation was done as early as November 2019. The module would have been a venue for both Junior and Senior High School students of DFFS on the business of farming from site selection to maintenance and up to post-harvest and marketing. Included in the whole plan was the establishment of a processing plant for the production of the farm. Thus, the idea of CHILI GARLIC in CORN OIL.
The Development Impact:
Perhaps the most important aspect of this business plan will be the impact that the project will bring to the community. More than a purely business endeavor, the project hopes to sustain the operations and development efforts of Dagatan Family Farm School. DFFS is a project of the Pampamilyang Paaralang Agrikultura Foundation, Inc. (PPAFI) which aims to bring integral formation and community development in the area where it operates. A portion of the income proceeds from the business will flow to DFFS for its scholarship fund. The project directly benefits families of the communities by providing them relevant integrative education for the youth and their parents.
The local economic impact of the business:
The business hopes to employ at least five (5) staff for its manpower complement. The staff is women-mothers (parents of graduate and present students of DFFS) who will be otherwise unemployed had it not for the business. On top of the above-mentioned direct employees, the business will support farmers in the area particularly those planting chilies and garlic.
Whereas before, these employees were unemployed, the project now gives them additional sources of income and employment. The potential income of P5,000 per month is big in comparison to the prevailing monthly rate in the locality for similar small and medium enterprises.
The project also advocates farming and will incorporate the practical application in the planting of chilies in the backyard farm of the present students. The enterprise will buy all harvest from these plants. Students and their families will have an additional source of family income from these activities. Aside from the direct sale of chili pepper to the enterprise, the families of the students are also encouraged to re-sell the product. The families of the students will get the product at a lower price than the suggested retail price.
Local social impact of the business’ products:
The social impact of the business should look beyond what the business will do as an enterprise. As has already been stated, part of the income will flow to the scholarship fund of DFFS. As a secondary school that aims to provide its students with entrepreneurial skills and attitudes, DFFS will ensure that the fruits of the business go beyond the income and employment generated by the enterprise. At least 100 students will directly benefit from the project, not to mention the indirect beneficiaries such as their families and relatives. Present students of DFFS and their families will be asked to plant chilies in their own backyard farms, the produce of which will be bought by the enterprise. As part of their agriculture subject, the students will experience instantaneously the intricacies of farming from land preparation to the marketing of their produce. Part of the formation of the students is the study of the business processes of the project from the supply side of the enterprise up to the demand side. Also, the business will be a laboratory for these students to experience first-hand how a business is being managed.
